  • Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics | Vet Tech + Pharmacy Team | Lachlan Benoit

Lachlan Benoit Back to Veterinary/Pharmacy Staff... Veterinary Assistant Primary Location: Menlo Park Adopted at birth from New York, Lachlan grew up with two older siblings in a small town in New Hampshire. At age 7, he began riding English and jumping; rode until he was in middle school; then took a hiatus until he moved to Southern California, where he worked as an exerciser rider and cared for 63 horses at the Orange County Polo Club. He also worked as a private groom and taught summer camp riding lessons in SoCal. Lachlan’s goal in life since he was a child has been to work with equines and someday open his own wild horse sanctuary. Toward that end, he volunteered at a farm animal sanctuary called The Gentle Barn and was able to work closely with a wild mustang who had dwarfism and was blind in her right eye. Lachlan reports, “That was the most eye-opening experience I’ve ever had, seeing how animals come in traumatized but are able to work through it by putting their trust into kind-hearted people.” He says that becoming an equine veterinary assistant will give him the opportunity to learn and grow so in the future he’ll be able to use what he learns to pursue his dream. He is also attending Southern New Hampshire University (online), working toward his bachelor’s degree in Sociology. , Lachlan considers himself “a huge cat dad.” He immediately misses his black cat Coco and Kiara, his Siamese, the second he leaves to go anywhere. He enjoys relaxing at home with his kitties and watching Disney+. Since moving to the SF Bay Area, Lachlan has also been spending much of his free time exploring the beautiful parks and nature preserves. And, since he does not currently have a horse of his own, he’s looking for opportunities to ride! >

  • Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics | Horse Veterinarians | Zoe Davidson

Zoe Davidson DVM, MRCVS Primary Clinic: Menlo Park When her older brother was a baby, Zoe’s parents moved from England to California for her Dad’s job. So Zoe, born in Redwood City and raised in Half Moon Bay, is the only “American” in her English family. She started horseback riding at age 6, growing up riding both Western Pleasure and English. After a stint at Barrel Racing, she says she “got more disciplined” and switched over to Dressage and Hunter Jumper, getting her thrills from jumping and galloping on the trails. After achieving a B.Sc. in Animal Biology from U.C. Davis, Dr. Davidson earned her DVM at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She decided to pursue a career as an equine veterinarian because she enjoys using science to provide care for the horses that give such happiness, comfort, and joy to the human population — and she also loves working outdoors. Upon completing her veterinary credential, she worked for two years at Tyrrells Equine in Cambridge, England, delivering dental, general practice, and preventive medicine across five different counties. Her particular areas of interest are general practice, dentistry, preventive, and emergency medicine. She believes strongly in educating clients and empowering them to provide the best care for their horses. While at U.C. Davis, Zoe played on the Division I Women’s Tennis Team. • Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics | Horse Veterinarians | Diagnostics

Diagnostic Imaging Our diagnostic imaging technology and expertise is among the finest available in Northern California: Nuclear Scintigraphy (Bone Scan): Particularly useful for horses with multiple limb lameness, subtle lameness or lameness of the proximal limb, back or pelvis, this very sensitive technique can often diagnose diseases not visible with other imaging methods. Learn more... CT (Computed Tomography): Used primarily to detect changes in bone or soft tissue that may be difficult to detect on traditional radiographs. CT can provide a great amount of information useful in the diagnosis and treatment of equine leg and foot lameness including evaluation of soft tissue injuries such as ligament tears and cartilage lesions, as well as micro fractures in bone. It is also beneficial for evaluating equine head injuries such as skull fractures, sinus and dental problems, bone cysts and bone infections. Learn more... Digital Radiography (X-ray): Mobile units are available for imaging lower limbs and hooves in the field. For abdominal, thoracic and other studies such as shoulders, hips, stifles, back and neck, our outpatient clinics and hospitals have larger equipment. Myelography can be performed to assess the spinal cord, and venography to examine blood flow. Ultrasound: Used in orthopedics to identify the cause of heat or filling associated with soft-tissue problems such as muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries, ultrasound may be used to locate optimal joint injection sites or guide surgical procedures. In internal medicine, ultrasound is used to locate masses or abscess pockets and identify drainage tracts from infection or foreign objects. Cardiac ultrasound, or echocardiography, can help in the diagnosis and treatment of blood flow issues. Endoscopy: Using a long, flexible endoscope/camera passed via the nose, endoscopy can be used to assess the respiratory tract or stomach. Gastroscopy is the only way to accurately diagnose gastric ulcers in horses. Ulcers are extremely common and can cause colic, weight loss, poor performance, and other symptoms. Gastroscopy may also be used to diagnose tumors, impactions, and other issues. Different types of endoscopes are used to examine other internal organs (e.g., uterus or urinary bladder), or to examine the upper airway for diseases or disorders that may affect breathing and performance. Our equipment includes a special pediatric endoscope for use in foals. • Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics | Horse Veterinarians | Henry's Story

Back to News/Events... August 20, 2019: Patient Spotlight Henry's Success Story We're always pleased to highlight successful cases! On June 18th, 2019, one of the Jasper Ridge Farm miniature horses, Henry, dislocated his right shoulder... Steinbeck Peninsula Equine veterinarians Amanda Hedges, Russ Peterson, Katelin McKeown, and Mackenzie Adams worked to manually manipulate the shoulder back into place. Unfortunately, this was unsuccessful and further diagnostics revealed that the dislocation was complicated by joint capsule and ligamentous tearing, as well as a hereditary osteochondral humoral head defect. Henry was splinted while numerous veterinarians from around the world were consulted on this uncommon case. Renowned equine locomotor veterinarian at CIRALE Institute (France), Dr. Jean-Marie Denoix consulted on Henry’s case, as well as CSU radiologist (Colorado, USA) Dr. Kurt Selberg and numerous other equine veterinarians from both across the United States and abroad. Henry stayed at Steinbeck Peninsula Equine in Menlo Park while his leg was splinted and he received daily laser therapy, treatment, and re-assessments by doctors Russ Peterson, Amanda Hedges, Jackie Dietrich, Lauren Work, Katelin McKeown, and Megan Righi. After numerous consultations, the consensus was that Henry would need surgical intervention in order to obtain joint stability to allow him to continue his job helping others at Jasper Ridge Farm. The veterinary surgeons of Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinic in Salinas were ready and excited to help Henry receive the best surgical care. On July 31st, Henry underwent a five-hour surgery to fuse his shoulder joint and place hardware with 11 screws to stabilize the joint. Radiographs and a CT scanner were used to plan and execute the surgery where they used a custom fitted plate from a human medical device company. Doctors Tim Eastman, Nick Carlson, and Danica Wolkowski were successful in their surgery. Henry returned to Steinbeck Peninsula Equine in Menlo Park on August 5th where friends could visit while we monitored his recovery. We are excited to report that on August 16th, after saying goodbye to the Steinbeck Peninsula Equine team, Henry was able to walk into the trailer and return home comfortably to Jasper Ridge Farm. We are proud to donate our time and resources as the regular veterinarians for Jasper Ridge Farm , which helps children and adults facing physical and emotional challenges, through therapeutic interaction with animals. Way to go Jasper Ridge Farm and Steinbeck Peninsula Equine! >
