Shared Images and a Shared Plan are Foundational for Good Hoof Care

Keeping your horse sound over the long haul takes teamwork, especially between your farrier and your veterinarian. Consulting with the benefit of farrier films is one of the most effective ways we can work together to support your horse’s performance, comfort, and longevity.
Farrier “films” are digital radiographs (a.k.a. x-rays) of your horse’s feet, which can be used to guide trimming and/or shoeing. The information these images provide facilitates a more individualized approach, which can improve hoof balance and help alleviate lameness that might be caused by otherwise unseen conditions.

For example, by revealing the precise position of the coffin bone, the information provided by a radiograph can help your farrier properly align the trim and/or shoe with the horse’s internal anatomy, rather than relying on external hoof shape alone. These images can also help your veterinarian and farrier identify and address issues such as negative palmar angles, long toes, under-run heels, and subtle imbalances — often before a horse shows signs of lameness.
Consulting farrier films will benefit a horse’s health and well-being at every stage of life — from growing youngsters, to mid-career competitors and trail companions, to golden agers.
Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics veterinarians recommend taking a set of “baseline” farrier films as early as possible, then taking and comparing updates periodically, depending on your horse’s age, activity, and general health. And, when it comes to keeping your horse sound, we believe monitoring and balancing all four feet is key to peak performance and comfort.
When it comes to keeping your horse sound, we believe balancing all four feet is key to peak performance and comfort. So, when you get farrier films of your horse’s front feet, we’ll x-ray the hind feet for free. Promotion applies when images of all 4 feet are taken at a single appointment. Offer good through the end of 2026. Please contact Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics to schedule an appointment ...
