Open 24/7 – 365 days/year, our hospitals provide round-the-clock care tailored to each patient's individual needs, with veterinarians onsite at all times. Our outpatient clinics are ideal for minimally-invasive procedures, providing added safety and equipment not available in the field. Outpatient surgeries include complex dental procedures, laser mass removals and other standing surgeries. Surgical patients are always sent home w ith complete post-surgical care instructions. Emergency Surgery A surgeon and anesthetist are always on-call for emergency surgery, from colic to fractures. Our in-house labs can provide results in minutes for critical cases, rather than the overnight waits typical when using outside labs. We understand that emergency situations can be extremely stressful. Our knowledgable and compassionate staff will do their utmost to help you make informed decisions. Elective Surgery Common elective procedures include upper airway surgery, mass removal, laparoscopy, urogenital surgery, castration (regular and cryptorchid), as well as many others. Minimally-invasive laparoscopic-assisted techniques may be employed for procedures such as ovariectomy, cryptorchid testical removal or abdominal exploratory surgery. When general anesthesia is required, horses are dropped off the day prior for a presurgical/anesthetic assessment, and are discharged to go home when they are ready. > Find more information about surgery in the Resources section of our website...

  • Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics | Vet Tech + Pharmacy Team | Andrea Bushlow

Andrea Bushlow Back to Veterinary/Pharmacy Staff... Veterinary Assistant Primary Location: Salinas Andrea Bushlow grew up in the Monterey/Carmel area and has been riding horses since she was 7 years old, starting in the Hunter/Jumper discipline and moving into ranch riding and then into eventing. Horses have always been her passion. Her parents thought it would be a phase, but it seems to have stuck. When Andrea was younger, she had always wanted to become a veterinarian... but then “life happened” and she pursued other careers, in education, mortgages, and managing a Starbucks, all while earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Phoenix (online) and working with horses. Andrea has trained horses in the Central Valley, worked for her old trainer (Samantha Scanlan) in the Carmel Valley, and managed horses for local Olympic Eventer Lauren Billys Shady. Her favorite part of the job is the daily care and the related details including grooming, basic health care, and knowing every inch of the horses for which she is responsible. Andrea traveled nationally and internationally with Lauren and accompanied her horse Castle Larchfield Purdy (“Purdy”) from Carmel Valley to Aachen, Germany, and on to Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics. She got to know some of the local veterinarians quite well, including Dr. Laramie Winfield of Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics, who encouraged her to apply for her current role as a Veterinary Assistant at SPEC. Andrea is also pursuing certification in Equine Massage. When Andrea is not working with horses, she can be found doing barn chores at the property she manages or riding a horse, there, named Olin. She says, “Olin is basically a giant puppy dog. His background is in Eventing and he’s letting me have fun experiencing cross-country — and we both pretend to like dressage.” Andrea has a white, 8.5-lb dog named Cookie who has been with her through all of life’s twists and turns since she traded a month of pasture for her when she was just a pup. Andrea also loves hiking and walking Carmel Beach, traveling, and exploring new places. >

  • Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics | Horse Veterinarians | Travel

Travel Please call our office to discuss your travel plans as early as possible — at least 1-2 weeks prior to interstate travel and at least 2-3 weeks prior to international travel. Health Certificates A health certificate verifying that your horse is not carrying any communicable diseases may be required for travel across state lines or international borders. Although a health certificate is typically good for 30 days from the date of the physical exam performed by the veterinarian, it's always a good idea to check in with us whenever your horse travels to be sure your certificate is up-to-date. Since blood work and lab tests are likely to be needed, please plan ahead! Things to have ready for a health certificate examination: Horse’s barn name and show name, age, sex, breed, boarding location address, owner’s address, owner’s phone number, address of where the horse is going, day the horse is leaving, and the name, address and phone number of the hauler. The hauler must present all required documents when transporting your horse across state lines or international borders. Coggins Proof of a Coggins test, which checks for Equine Infectious Anemia, is required for transport into most U.S. states and many countries. Although rare in California, this disease, which is passed by insects, has no known cure. A simple blood draw is needed for the test and it takes 2-3 business days to get results back from the lab. >
