Veterinary Assistant
Primary Clinic: Salinas
Brooke lives in Santa Cruz, CA, where she was born and raised. She did most of her schooling as independent study, and after graduating high school, attended Cabrillo College part time.
Brooke grew up riding, early on taking Western riding lessons with her pony, Kachina. Brooke has owned horses all her life and has always been interested in gaining more education regarding horse healthcare. Brooke worked for Costanoa Lodge, for several summers, leading guided trail rides. She also held a job working for a small animal emergency veterinary hospital. The combination of these two experiences helped Brooke realize that her primary interest is in equine veterinary medicine. Brooke says that she’s also gotten a good look at various aspects of the equine veterinary world through being a client when her own horses have needed care and that, too, has made her want to learn more about equine veterinary practice — something she has always seen herself doing. She is excited to get more experience in the industry and hopes that her role as a Veterinary Assistant with Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics will help her clarify whether she wants to attend veterinary school to continue to pursue her passion.
Brooke currently owns four horses: She rides Western Pleasure with Cruise, a 13-year-old bay Mustang who was rounded up from Devil’s Garden as a yearling. She also has two miniature horses and a “POA” named Austin. (The POA — Pony of the Americas — breed was developed in the United States. The foundation stallion was an Arabian/Appaloosa/Shetland pony cross. A breed registry was founded in 1954 and within 15 years had registered 15,000 ponies).
Brooke was raised around animals and says that it’s now a huge part of who she is as an adult. When not working or in school, Brooke often goes on trail rides with friends and can usually be found at the barn spending time with her animals which, in addition to her horses, also include “a small mutt” named Rico and her Nigerian dwarf goat Colin. When she’s not with her animals, Brooke spends time with friends or family at the beach or riding ATVs at her family’s Santa Cruz ranch.
