Amy Rand
MVB
Primary Location: Salinas
Intern
Amy Rand hails from Guilford, Connecticut. She gained a solid Eventing and Dressage background, growing up as the typical “barn rat,” always helping out with chores and offering to ride whatever needed to be ridden. She chose to pursue a career as an equine veterinarian because she has always admired the athletic nature of the horse, and enjoys helping them stay at the top of their game.
Amy received a BS in Biology with a minor in Cellular Biology from UConn (University of Connecticut), where she competed on the Intercollegiate Dressage Team (IDA) during all four years of her undergraduate studies. She loves following professional Eventing and hopes to someday make it to the Kentucky Horse Park to watch the Landrover Kentucky Three Day Event.
Dr. Rand earned her MVB (equivalent to DVM) from the University College Dublin School of Veterinary Medicine. During veterinary school, she had the privilege of working closely with a PhD student assessing the fearfulness responses of thoroughbred broodmares, and was honored to become a named author on a number of her colleague’s research papers. She was very excited to see the abstract to one of the papers with which she had assisted presented to members of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) at the BEVA Congress 2023. Dr. Rand’s interests in equine medicine include sports medicine, reproduction, and surgery. Her future plans include a residency, but she has not yet decided on her area of specialization.
Amy does not currently own her own horse, but hopes to… someday. She is also a self-described “cat person.” She misses her family cat, Tigerlily, who lives at home in Connecticut with her parents, and is an “aunt” to her sister’s kitty, Phoebe. Amy worries that living and working so close to the SPCA might make it difficult for her to resist the natural cat distribution system… In her spare time, Amy hopes to explore California, as she has never before lived on the West Coast. She enjoys going to the beach, baking, riding horses, hiking, listening to music, going to concerts, and watching movies.
